From Start-Up to Scale-Up: How Breakthrough Culture Transformed CAVU’s Leadership and Unity
When CAVU, a tech-driven subsidiary of Manchester Airport Group (MAG), embarked on a mission to transform its…
Manchester Airports Group (MAG), a leading airport group, has long been a cornerstone in the UK aviation industry. However, during and in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, MAG faced a period of challenging recovery. Badly impacted by the pandemic, MAG continued to experience pressing issues surrounding staff retention and wellbeing, ineffective prioritisation, a rigid cultural mindset and uncertainty in the business market. Recognising the need for resilient strategies, enhanced communication and the need to align ahead of renewal and growth, our Breakthrough partnership began.
By introducing our bespoke Programme structures for both MAG’s leadership team and the broader organisation, we worked collaboratively to foster a culture conducive to recovery and growth. The Breakthrough Programmes empowered MAG to effectively navigate its challenges and position itself for long-term success in a dynamic business landscape. We were also able to identify additional opportunities for them to develop, including in DE&I.
In 2022, Breakthrough implemented our comprehensive cascading Programme structure aimed at improving MAG’s current operations, restructuring the organisation, and redirecting it towards a future of unity, alignment and sustained growth.
MAG’s transformation journey included our Wave 1 Leaders Intensive followed by subsequent Accelerator and Navigational Check In Programmes. Through our Wave 1 Programmes, Breakthrough worked closely with MAG’s Leadership team, CHRO and Group Talent & Diversity Director to embed the Breakthrough Mindset, Language and Behaviours to elevate performance while developing a renewed cultural strategy. We designed our Leaders Intensive to create the perfect opportunity to launch MAGs renewed Purpose and Values, aligned with our approach. The Accelerators addressed real-time business challenges, enabling MAG to check-in, course-correct and prepare its leaders for the approaching summer growth surge.
Our Wave 3 Breakthrough Tools Programmes were implemented to embed a Common Language, raise awareness and generate opportunities for success amongst MAG’s managers and team leaders. This was effective in providing practical and conceptual ways of working, breaking down silos and creating stronger communication pathways.
Wave 1’s Leaders Intensive Programme transformed the organisational landscape of MAG. It transitioned from a leadership that lacked a clear strategy, whilst combating infrastructural challenges to an environment distinguished by strategic clarity and collective alignment. A mindset shift redirected MAG’s leadership team from perpetual crisis management towards one of heightened emotional awareness, equipping leadership teams to build resilience and effectively manage their energy.
Our Breakthrough Tools revolutionised how MAG looked at time and time management practices. It has enabled associates to utilise their time and prioritise their tasks more effectively. This transformation instigated a more proactive and agile approach to tackling challenges. Adopting a shared Breakthrough Language has facilitated alignment within the team, empowering individuals to deliver Breakthrough performance personally and professionally. The Programme gave individuals the opportunity to work “ON” the business rather than “IN” the business, and highlighted an undercurrent desire for strategic investment and innovation all along.
Reaching just under 500 associates, our Wave 3 Breakthrough Tools Programme addressed MAG’s barriers to fostering a culture of transparency. Facilitating open and honest dialogue spurred the implementation of ED&I initiatives that have been a pivotal achievement. We launched the MAG Culture, Values and Leadership Framework which aimed to ingrain diversity and inclusion into the foundation of the organisation. This shift set the foundation for every individual to feel valued and empowered to take ownership of their role in shaping MAG’s future.
